SYTE had its beginnings way back in 1986, when Backstares Theatre came into existence as a professional community theatre company.
Initially a place for women to do drama and dance workshops, youth classes were soon introduced.
Backstares continued doing productions and workshops for the general community up until 1996 when the decision was made to change the name and focus to youth theatre.
So in 1997 Southern Youth Theatre Ensemble was born!
Since then, SYTE has produced up to two productions a year and has expanded its performance and workshop base to include the entire metropolitan area, as well as Yankalilla and Goolwa.
